INDD 200
Core Studio Industrial Design

Emily Carr University of Art + Design, CA

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This introductory Core Studio acquaints students to key aspects of Industrial Design. Students will learn fundamental design principles, diverse materials, issues of sustainability, fabrication and making, while simultaneously exploring varied social and cultural contexts of industrial design. Students will engage in all aspects of the design process: research, analysis, sketching and iterative prototyping, and design development alongside presentation techniques in order to meet the required studio objectives, through both individual and group projects. Discussions and critical reflection throughout the development of their studio project work help students make informed design decisions.

Project 01: Land: A TOOL FOR STUDIO

DESIGN A TOOL FOR STUDIO MADE FROM PAPER.

This tool will be three-dimensional, develoepd iteratively, and constructed from paper-based materials. Consider this a fully functional tool that you will gift to your classmate at the project's end. Try to consider the following: What is a tool? What is studio? What are your partner's needs? What are the limitations of the material you are working with?TTh

MATERIAL STUDIES

Students were prompted to create material studies from paper materials. This allowed space for exploration and experimentation on different ways of manipulating paper. These studies were vital in allowing students to understand materiality and push the boundaries of what they would conventionally know about material.

Project 02: Water: SITED OBJECTS

DESIGN A SITE-SPECIFIC, MATERIAL-BASED OUTCOME (OR SERIES OF OUTCOMES) THAT INITIATES CONVERSATIONS ABOUT A PLACE, WITHIN THAT PLACE.

Throughout this project, emphasis is placed on site specificity, discursive design,  materiality and object semantics. Final concepts will center semantics and affordances of three-dimensional objects, and need to be buildable as full-scale, functional prototypes with considered use of materials.

Project 03: Air: CARE FOR CORMORANTS

DESIGN A CARING RELATIONSHIP WITH/FOR PLEAGIC CORMORANTS, THEIR HABITATS, OR THEIR MORE-THAN-HUMAN RELATIONS.

Design a caring relationship with or for cormorants, their habitats, or their more-than-human relations. In designing for care and relationships, each group will iteratively explore actions and objects that could support cormorants in this context. Build upon your skills centering truth to materials, and to design functional objects with consideration for affordances and semantics. Consider the role of time—whether actions or objects might be temporary, semi-permanent, seasonal, or infrequent.
