This summer, I spent two weeks teaching a new design course for teens, 'Design for the Future'. This course is part of Emily Carr University's Junior Art Institute. Utilizing imagination and creativity, students explored how design can address real-world challenges and generate innovative solutions through different opportunities to investigate several forms of design.

As a class, students found challenges through possible futures, focusing on the theme of a beach summer day for their persona, Emily. This resulted in several design outcomes ranging from bag prototypes, information signages, mobile apps, and conceptual designs.
DESIGN BRIEF
As time-traveling designers, we’ve journeyed to 2045 to solve Emily’s problems. This project explores how innovative design can overcome the obstacles of tomorrow, creating a safe, fun, and memorable beach day experience. By addressing Emily’s needs, we're not just solving problems; we're dreaming up a future where innovative designs make everyone's ideal summer day a reality.
Embracing infinite possibilities and alternate timelines, we've drawn up different stories to assess Emily's challenges and needs. Through our findings, we have found design problems that Emily and others might face. Through iterative design and prototyping, we created a variety of design solutions that help create a better beach day experience.
Tanning Routine Application
This app helps users track their tanning progress and routines while providing vital information on UV safety. It also connects users to a local community of tanning enthusiasts, turning a simple routine into a shared experience.
Floatation Device
A personal, steerable floatie designed for comfort and control. This device keeps you afloat while you enjoy the scenery. The side propellers double as armrests and allow you to steer, while motion sensors near your shoulders and feet detect and warn you of approaching objects.
Beach Signages
These signs visually educate beachgoers on how to safely identify the difference between a shark and a dolphin. By providing clear visuals and safety protocols, the signs help visitors feel confident and knowledgeable about the marine life around them.
Phone Sun Visor
An attachable visor that helps reduce glare on your phone screen. This simple design allows beachgoers to easily read e-books or scroll through social media without straining their eyes in the bright sun.
Blanket Bag
A reconfigurable bag that carries all your beach items and converts into a blanket to sit on. This design offers a seamless transition from traveling to relaxing, and provides a quick and easy way to pack up when it’s time to go home.
